This is Tomoe Mami from the Japanese anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica (魔法少女まどか☆マギカ). I drew her looking older than she does in the show so this must be the happy ending version of this character.

Even though the show has girls fighting evil in princess costumes, the show deals with some dark motifs like depression and obsession. It goes to some unexpected places thematically. This character in particular gets some harsh abuse. Unlike most anime this show has stuck with me long after it was finished. If you can look past the severe cuteness of the character designs I recommend it because it has a happy (albeit confusing) ending.

The last episode of the japanese anime Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt aired over the Christmas weekend. I watched all 13 episodes and I still don't quite know what to make of the show. Even though I found entertainment in the absurd humor I don't recommend people watch it. It is very funny but very offensive. Anyway, this is the character Panty. If you can find the show, watch at your own risk.

Also, I hope that everyone had a great Christmas. I went home for the holidays. It was the first time I have been with family for Christmas in many many years and it was long over due. Merry Christmas!!!

One of the reasons I haven't posted many drawings* recently is that almost all of the drawings have been on a much larger scale than I am used to. If I don't get a drawing done in 2 weeks or less I lose interest or I've come up with another idea that seems far more interesting and it gets thrown in the drawer. The drawer next to my desk is like a sad orphanage for abandoned girls. And since most of the drawings have been large it takes much longer to finish which means I need to cover a lot of paper with ink fast before I lose interest again. So, after so many deserted girls I decided to buy a new, medium sized sketchbook. This girl is the first page. I my amazement the drawings have been coming out at regular intervals now. I find it much easier and quicker to work at a much more normal 8.5X11" size. It's felt like dancing on paper. As a matter of fact, the first several pages are made up of dancing girls. I hope that with this new sketchbook I will be posting a new girl much more often.

*The other reasons are work, video games and laziness. The last of which is the main culprit:(

This drawing was based on a marble statue I saw. But when I did an internet search I couldn't find it again. So, I don't know who to get the credit to for the original idea:( I wanted to test out some new paper that my roommate got for me. It's a polypropylene paper made by Yupo. I love the way the paper holds a super crisp line with ink. But the drawbacks are that it doesn't behave too well with pencil (very tough to erase), there are a few imperfections in the paper causing the drawn line to skip and you have to work slow to allow the ink to dry. But, I do like the paper and will be using it more in the future.

When I was VERY young, I remember watching a Saturday morning TV show called Jason of Star Command. I liked it because the special effects were like Star Wars and it had Scotty from Star Trek in it, and the main character was named Jason;) When I found out there was a DVD of the show available I hunted everywhere for it and finally found one at Fry's electronics. The show is terrible, but when viewed through my nostalgia filter I enjoyed every minute of it.

This girl is Captain Nicole Davidoff. Mostly she got in trouble and needed saving. The box floating above her was supposed to be the robot sidekick.

Not sure why I never finished this one. I imagine I got sidetracked and started another drawing.

This one seemed like a good idea at the time. The more I drew a girl half naked on all fours trying to convince her finicky cat to eat his food the more I realized it was a little humiliating. Plus, looking up her backside, though covered by sheer cloth, was starting to slip down a smutty slope I really don't want to take this blog. So, it remains unfinished. All of the women drawn here should be joyful, brave, compassionate and above all sexy.

I just checked the clock and it is the start to a whole new decade. Goodbye 2009. Hello 2010. Time to start the teen years of this millennium.
This day marks the 4th anniversary of my blog. And this year I will have far more drawings than last year starting with this one. It is the first of a three part drawing that I gave to my friend Mark for Christmas. I think it is a very good way to start the new year.

First thing I've done this year is post a new drawing. Second thing I'm going to do is shave my grizzly out-of-control beard. And last I will watch a DVD of the NASA Mercury missions until I pass out from too much booze;) This is going to be a great year. No, wait! This is going to be a great decade!!!

This is 戦場ヶ原ひたぎ from the anime 物語. I had intended to color her, but there is a real disconnect for me when I try use my computer for art. In real life I observe exactly where my hand is placing a line on paper, but in the pixel world I stare at a screen with my hand sort of doing what I want it to do. It's like writing with your left hand. It feels unnatural. It is obviously not finished and I am not certain it ever will. I should stick with what I know I can do. I've never liked the idea of being a jack of all trades anyway. I'd rather be a master of one;)

I haven't felt like drawing much for a long while. You never can predict what the winds of change will blow your way. Sometimes it is roses and sometimes it is crap. Sometimes you are ready for the breezes only to find you are in the middle of a hurricane. So, out of a sense of obligation to this blog I've posted a very sloppy drawing which is probably reflective of my mood. On the surface the girl looks like she could care less that a zephyr has tossed her towel exposing her naked to the world. She knows that she can't control how the winds blow. But in her head she is wishing she had wrapped that towel around herself a little tighter.

If you tool around my blog long enough you will see that I play video games. My gamertag on Xbox is Ockham's brother and I'm usually broke by the holidays because I've bought whatever the latest game to come out is. For instance; this girl is from Sega's new game coming out in January called Bayonetta. When you combine a sexy girl and video games, it probably means I will be buying this game. And drawing her. As luck would have it, Wizard magazine is holding a contest right now where people have sent in their version of the character and are having a fan vote on their favorite. So, if you go to the Wizard website you will see that I entered this drawing, but it's tricked out in color by my friend Mark Winters, who really made it sing. Check it out. Sorry for not posting this month. After I got back from Comic-con I had a few things to do. One of which I'll be posting soon.

I've been going to Comic-con for several years now. And Every year I buy a new Gundam model and see a lot of panels, but I think I'm about to the point where I've had enough of the show. The spectacle is best observed from afar. There are so many people there that if you want to see a certain panel or meet a certain celebrity, then get in line early and pack a lunch, because that is what you will be doing all day. They should rename the show Wait-in-line-con. I spent 4 hours outside waiting to see the Iron Man panel. But the kicker is that I didn't get to see the panel. There were too many people in the auditorium already. I did get to see Kevin Smith, though, and it was worth the wait.

This year was full of ups and downs. It was at the same time, the worst show I've been to and the best. There were 2 highlights to the show that made it a memorable one. One was to meet the cast of the Mighty Boosh, a British TV show I adore. Noel Felding made me a new cover for my season 2 DVD. And the other highlight was to meet and give girl 125 to Jessica Chobot.

Every year the folks at the video game website ign report the gaming news to come out of Comic-con. And one of the people who reports the gaming news for ign is Jessica Chobot. She also hosts ign stratigize on the Xbox dashboard. Not only is she hot, she is also a super cool chick. But don't take my word for it. Go visit her website.

She likes strong female characters, so a few days before the show I drew her as Wonder Woman. I caught her while she was at the Symbiote Studios booth, signing statues in the likeness of herself, only in anime form.

The reason the picture is so blury is that I was shaking from being nervous about giving her the drawing (would she like it? Would she mistake it for something a monkey might throw?). She is super down to earth and easy to talk to which put me at ease. She liked the drawing and in return signed a a statue of herself , which is now standing on a shelf next to the new Gundam model I bought at the show.

I have never been a big I Dream of Jeannie fan. Although, her costume is fun to draw. I've always preferred Elizabeth Montgomery's Samantha. But of all the ladies from 50's and 60's TV my favorite is Donna Reed. When I was a much younger lad I had the biggest crush on Donna Reed and Julie Andrews.

I drew this girl on 18x24 Strathmore paper. It was too big to fit on my scanner, so I had a friend help me photograph it. The quality isn't as good as the scanner but it will suffice for internet purposes. There isn't a lot of contrast in it. Maybe I'll put some grey tones, or color it one day.

I got back from the craziness of this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Although I love the spectacle of 100,000 people mashed into a building to see what's new in sci-fi or finding that rare collectable that they have been searching for, it seems to me that the big guys like Sony, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros.,(insert 20 more large entertainment companies here) get all the attention while the small publishers tend to get overlooked. And you can tell the people who are there because they love what they do and the people that are there to pimp a product they know very little about. I think maybe the show has gotten too big for me. By Saturday I was Comic-con'd out and was ready to go home.

I love classical music and opera. This girl is from my favorite opera, Carmen. It's about a girl how is so sexy that she can seduce her way out of almost any situation. That is, until an ex-Spanish soldier becomes jealous at Carmen's flirting with a bull fighter.

These drawings were fun and quick to do. I plan on doing more of this. The real challenge of drawing in charcoal is that you have to get it right the first time. The blacks get ingrained in the paper and are simply impossible to erase. It is not like drawing in pencil at all. I did several others, but these are the best of the bunch. And this last one is my favorite.

Charcoal is VERY messy. When I finish one of these I'm covered in black. I tried out a different type of paper but I don't like the results. Too many lines in the paper. It looks like a Photoshop filter was applied to it.

Today is my favorite day of the entire year. It's the day where you can enjoy 15 hours of sunshine because today is the longest day of the year! I went for a hike this morning (before it got too hot. I think it is obvious from watching the new Star Trek movie multiple times that the uniform for the ladies was not designed for planetary exploration. It works for me though;)

This isn't so much a review of the new movie, rather than my opinion. There are some movies that you watch with a critical eye and marvel at the craft of movie making. Then there are movies (typically summer blockbusters) where you suspend your disbelief for a few hours and simply enjoy the ride. That is really what this new Star Trek is all about. It is about the start of exploring strange new worlds. It's an adventure story that beautifully sets up a crew of very likable and familiar heroes to once again, for the first time, boldly go where no one has gone before. But if you look deeper it is also something more than its surface.

I have watched Star Trek for a good deal of my life. The original series came on after school and while my parents watched the news me and my brother watched the exploits of the starship Enterprise. As cheesy and heavy handed in its message as it was I loved that show. I enjoyed the Next Generation when it was on, but the rest of the shows, although I have watched them, are very hit and miss. More misses than hits, as far as I'm concerned. The recent shows were like an exclusive club, where you needed a secret handshake and decoder ring in order to get any sort of enjoyment out of it. Gone was the excitement and colorful characters. Everything was black, white and grey. None of the shows have been near as good as the original series. So, what a shock and delight it was to watch the new Star Trek with it's sense of fun and discovery. And thank God there is color. Glorious blues and reds and yellows. Every time I have seen it, I have had a grin from ear to ear. I am so happy this movie was made. One of the things that made the original Star Trek Star Trek was it's optimism. That we could get past our differences and get along with one another because our differences, in a holistic sense, don't amount to or accomplish anything. After watching this movie I feel like current politics is crap. One nations politics or religion isn't worth fighting over. The villain, Nero, is from the DS9/Voyager universe, and to me represents the old way of doing Star Trek. This new/old crew wins the fight against a bad guy with a cynical world view. I think many people all over the world are bitter. We need this type of movie to show us that we don't have to be cynical and to embrace the things that make us different. All people are different and that makes us human.

I have assigned a much grater significance to this movie than what is really there. That is why I'm saying this is not a review of the movie. It is just that I watched a movie where a crew of different nations and planets took for granted that they could come together to defeat an enemy that was hell bent on changing the universe to suit his selfish wants. It is also a lot of fun to watch the spectacle of our heroes engaging in fisticuffs and space ships doing battle in deep space.

To make a long story short; I <3 this movie.

I'm finally settled in the new house. And just in time too, because Star Trek came out and I'm going to say right now it is the best movie of the year. For me at any rate. I've gone to see it 3 times and I plan to see it a few more times. Maybe I'll draw a Star Trek girl and give a review of the movie with it.

I've been having a pretty uninspiring month as far as drawing is concerned. Every new thing I've started has just been a disaster. This girl was started a month and a half ago and is finally to a postable state. It was supposed to be something quick and easy that I could bang out but took far longer than it should. Meh:\

Not much drawing happened this month. My dad stayed with me for a week. Living a few states away I don't really get to see him much. We went on hikes and launched rockets and other really nerdy things. It was really great to see him and I miss his company. A friend of mine had her birthday last week and I sketched her son and gave it to her as a gift. But beyond this I failed to get 3 drawings finished. They are well begun but not done. I did manage to get this girl done though. And I stole inspiration from Gil Elvgren for this. If you google "Gil Elvgren right scale" you will see what I mean. The only other thing I was able to accomplish was getting a gamer score of 10001 on my xbox.

This girl was intended to be up on January 1st. However, instead I was nursing my ailing computer back to health. This girl is waking up on the first day of 2009, anticipating what the year has in store.

I certainly hope everyone had a great holiday and new year. It was a pretty hectic time with family down for a visit and work and everything that goes on with the holidays. I look forward to having things fall back into a regular routine. I haven't posted anything for a while because of a hard drive meltdown which caused my Mac to be away from home at the Mac hospital to get a brain transplant. Nothing was recoverable, so I've been teaching it how to scan stuff and use Photoshop properly. January 1st also marked the 3rd anniversary of this blog. The last 3 years of this man's life have been the best of all my years. Even though the economy is bad and the countries of world seems to be angry with one another, I will remain optimistic that in the end people are inherently good in nature and even though we all screw up, we have best intentions at heart. Here's to an fantastic 2009!

Every Friday after work me and my friends take a trip to the Churchill's Cigars to buy a few Rocky Patels and chat about this and that. Rocky Patel cigars are great. It's what I usually smoke. I'm a big fan of the Olde World. Yesterday was a special day because I got to meet Mr. Patel himself! He was just chilling at the cigar shop. Super nice guy. Apparently he travels around the country visiting cigar shops and meeting people. He wasn't even really pimping his wares. Just hanging out and talking with folks. I can get behind a man who would rather visit the shops himself than send a sales rep. Makes people want to buy your product more. So, thanks for the smokes, Rocky.

Another month has flown by. It must have been a good one because I looked at the calendar today and this week is Halloween. Not my favorite holiday. I don't like scaring people or being scared. Nor do I like candy very much or the sight of blood. But when a girl bites someone on the neck, that is pretty cool.

This isn't one of the 3 drawings that I mentioned in my last post. Today I watched the new Evangelion movie (1.0 You Are Not Alone). As a huge fan of the TV show it surprised me that I really liked this condensed version of the story. Great animation. Very much looking forward to the second movie.
